Crochet Cuddly Car Seat Baby Blanket: Free Pattern and Video Tutorial

The Crochet Cuddly Car Seat Baby Blanket is my go-to hand-made gift for EVERY baby shower! Every new mom should have a small car seat blanket, in my opinion! It is the perfect size newborn baby blanket!

So like I said, I love to give the Crochet Cuddly Car Seat Baby Blanket as a gift. I usually do the blanket and a box of diapers; because, really, you can NEVER have too many of either! I love that I get to give something personalized that can be handed down through the generations (see About Me to learn more about why I love crafting).

This pattern was inspired by my mom. She actually gifted me a similar blanket when Precious Girl (PG-my first) was born. She made it because she had extra yarn from the large alphabet baby blanket she made for PG, so she made a smaller version with words on it.

After a while, I realized that this size of the blanket was PERFECT!

It was the PERFECT size to pad around PG’s tiny, little head in the car seat when the newborn insert still wasn’t snug enough for my comfort. Then, it was the PERFECT size to tuck around PG when it was below freezing out; and with the fuzzy baby yarn it was nice and warm (but not too warm). Now that PG is a toddler, it is the PERFECT size for her to drag around with her without tripping on it! So as you can see, SO FUNCTIONAL!!

Grandma’s Car Seat Blanket on My Head!

So, after analyzing the blanket, I called my mom to ask her how she made it. She gave me the basic idea of how to do the stitch (which is a well-known bobble stitch). She also told me some of the changes she would have made if she was going to do it again.

With those ideas and some adaptations of my own (such as changing hook size and altering how I do the bobble stitch), I developed the pattern for the Crochet Cuddly Car Seat Baby Blanket. This specific blanket is the one that I made for Darling Girl (DG-my second).

Let’s get on with HOW to actually make the Crochet Cuddly Car Seat Baby Blanket!

Materials

First, let’s talk materials.

Yarn

I use Baby Bee Baby Lou Lou yarn from Hobby Lobby. (If you head over to my Recommended Yarn page, you will see all about why I LOVE this yarn!)

Baby Bee Baby Lou Lou is a lightweight (3) yarn. Each skein is 3.5 ounces (259 yards). The blanket requires 2 skeins of yarn (1 of each color). The yardage is pretty tight (see the picture of left over yarn for reference), so if you end up crocheting looser and having a larger project, you MIGHT run out. Just be aware.

Left Over Yarn

For this specific blanket, I chose the colors sugarplum and flannel. This gives it a nice soft purple and very light grey. All of the colors are beautiful, so you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

If you choose to use a different yarn, you can use the weight and yardage of the Baby Lou Lou yarn as a guide when purchasing.

Hook

I use a size G/6-4.25mm aluminum crochet hook.

This is a much smaller hook than the “recommended hook size” on the yarn of size I/9-5.5 mm hook. This is because I want the blanket to have nice tight stitches to prevent little fingers from getting caught in the holes.

Other

You’ll want something to cut your yarn (scissors, nail clippers, etc) and a tapestry needle to weave in ends.

You’ll also need either the written pattern (keep reading) or the chart version of the pattern found at the bottom of the page (Jump to chart here).

*Note: The chart version is a pictorial representation of where single crochet and bobble stitches go in the pattern. If you prefer this versus the written format, go to the chart. The instructions for how to read the chart are included in the PDF.*

Size and Gauge

Finished size: 19 by 17 inches

Gauge: 14 single crochets for 18 rows = 4″x4″ square using a size G/6-4.25mm hook

Stitch Abbreviations Used

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

bo = bobble

st = stitch

Pattern Notes

  • To create the bobble stitch (bo):
    • You will basically repeat an incomplete double crochet.
      • *Yarn over (yo), insert hook, yo, pull through stitch, yo, pull through 2* repeat * to * 5 times (until you have 6 loops on your hook), yo, pull through all 6 loops (this completes the bobble stitch).
  • At the end of each row, I do not chain one and then turn, I just turn and go straight into my first sc. I find that I get a straighter edge that way. Feel free to chain one, then turn if that is what you prefer.
  • If you want to get a looser stitch, use a larger crochet hook; if you want tighter stitch, use a smaller one. I prefer a fairly tight stitch because I don’t like little fingers poking through the blanket. The final size of the blanket will vary based on your tension and hook size used, but mine is to the gauge above. (Remember if you choose a larger hook, you will use more yarn, and may need more than 1 skein of each color.)

  1. I tried to post a question and got a message saying my comment is spam. It’s not. I wondered in row 36 what sc I meant. Is it just a typo

  2. Row 14: has an error it says after the 3rd set of 11 sc. Its to sc in the next instead of bobble st
